Why Would a Small Pet Business Need EPLI?

Pro Tip:

A lot of our policyholders at Pet Care Insurance (PCI) are still in the early stages of their businesses, so EPLI isn’t something we offer.

If you’re growing your team and considering EPLI, you might also want these related coverages:

  • Workers Comp: Covers employee injuries and accidents on the job
  • Commercial Auto: Helps protect against the cost of accidents, injuries, and damage when your employees drive for work

Does EPLI Cover Defense Costs?

Situation What business owners may think Why EPLI still matters

You believe the claim is false

“I did nothing wrong, so I should be fine”

Legal defense can still cost money

The issue likely won’t reach trial

“It won’t go that far, so I don’t need legal defense”

Early legal help and response costs can still add up

The employee was only part-time or seasonal

“This is too small to become a real problem”

Small disputes can still lead to claims

Does EPLI Cover Independent Contractors?

The Big Takeaway

Most employment claims don’t start with something dramatic. They start with a disagreement that grows into something bigger.

It’s easy to think, “I’d never do anything like that” or “my team would never sue.” Until something happens. Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) is about being prepared to handle disagreements if they turn into claims as your team grows.

Comparing Employee Dishonesty Coverage & Bonding

PCI’s employee dishonesty coverage is similar to a bond, but there may be some key differences to consider.

Employee dishonesty coverage:

  • Can be purchased in the same transaction
  • Doesn’t run credit checks
  • Provides $10,000 per occurrence and $25,000 aggregate coverage

Bonds may differ from our dishonesty coverage by:

  • Checking your credit during the application process
  • Having a “Conviction Claus;” Often bonds won’t pay on claims unless there is a conviction
  • Many require you to reimbursement the bonding company after a claim is paid
