Pet Taxi Insurance FAQs

Pet taxi insurance isn’t usually legally required to drive or fly with animals, but many clients and partners expect you to have it before trusting you with their pets. Most importantly, it helps protect you financially if something happens during the trip, like a pet injury, illness, escape, or accident.

Licensing requirements for pet transporters vary by state and the type of transport you offer. Some pet transporters may need:

  • A local business license
  • USDA Class T registration (for certain commercial or interstate animal transporters)
  • Additional permits, depending on state or airline regulations

You may also need paperwork like a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) to travel with pets. Check the rules in the states or airports where you operate to make sure you’re compliant.

Pet taxi insurance from PCI covers you in all 50 states and U.S. territories. Your business and clients’ pets are protected for incidents on the job, whether that’s on the road, in the air, in client homes, at the airport or rest stop, or anywhere in between. We don’t cover international transport at this time.

Pet taxi insurance does not cover car accidents caused by your vehicle (that’s commercial auto insurance). Here’s what each covers:

  • Pet taxi insurance covers what happens during your services, like injuries to pets in your care or incidents like escapes or property damage during pickups and drop-offs.
  • Commercial auto insurance is designed to cover property damage and injuries caused by your vehicle while you or your employees are driving. It can also cover damage to or theft of your vehicle. Most states require you to carry commercial auto if you run a transport business.

For full protection on the road, pet taxis, flight nannies, and animal transporters need both pet taxi insurance and commercial auto insurance.

Comparing Employee Dishonesty Coverage & Bonding

PCI’s employee dishonesty coverage is similar to a bond, but there may be some key differences to consider.

Employee dishonesty coverage:

  • Can be purchased in the same transaction
  • Doesn’t run credit checks
  • Provides $10,000 per occurrence and $25,000 aggregate coverage

Bonds may differ from our dishonesty coverage by:

  • Checking your credit during the application process
  • Having a “Conviction Claus;” Often bonds won’t pay on claims unless there is a conviction
  • Many require you to reimbursement the bonding company after a claim is paid
