Professional Liability Insurance for Pet Groomers

Professional liability insurance protects pet groomers if a client claims your mistake, miscommunication, or judgment call cost them money. It’s included in every grooming policy at Pet Care Insurance (PCI), so there’s nothing extra to buy or add.

What Is Professional Liability Insurance?

Benefits of Cyber Liability Insurance

Have you ever had a close shave with a client accusing you of overcharging or underdelivering? Grooming is pet care and art, which means both your human and furry clients have to leave happy. Even if you do everything right, a client may still be unsatisfied with the outcome. That’s why pet groomers need tailored protection.

Professional liability insurance helps protect you if a client says you didn’t deliver as promised or made a mistake.

What Professional Liability Insurance Can Cover

Complaints of incorrect grooming

A client says you messed up their Pomeranian’s breed cut, and they had to pay another groomer to fix it before a family photoshoot. Professional liability is made to help cover claim costs like reimbursement for the cut, redo appointment, and ruined photos.

A client misinterprets your service menu, thinking your full groom package includes add-ons like a nail grind and dental cleaning. When you provide a standard groom, they say you didn’t deliver as advertised. This coverage could cover the cost of a misrepresentation claim.

You suggest a maintenance groom over the phone after talking to a client. After your mobile appointment, the client claims they had to book another session elsewhere to get the results they expected. Professional liability can help when a client comes to you to pay extra costs.

A client claims that your professional judgment in shaving their golden retriever to handle severe matting was unacceptable, given his breed’s special coat needs. This coverage keeps you from scrambling to pay for refunds and negligence claims.

A rescue organization claims that repeated poor grooming quality at your salon has harmed their business reputation. If dissatisfaction escalates to a lawsuit, professional liability is built to help cover your legal defense, even if the situation isn’t your fault.

Professional Liability Insurance FAQs

Professional liability insurance coverage is rarely legally required for dog groomers, but many choose to buy it to protect their services and advice.

Groomers balance their own judgment with client expectations, so disputes about a breed cut or spa package can quickly escalate into claims and lawsuits. Professional liability can protect you from an expensive surprise if a client claims you made a mistake or didn’t do what you promised.

For pet groomers, professional liability claims involve client disagreements or misunderstandings around your services. Claims that a cut was executed incorrectly, that a service didn’t match what was discussed, or that negligence during grooming caused a financial loss are the most common. If you need to file a claim, PCI keeps the process simple.

At PCI, professional liability insurance is automatically included in your pet groomer or mobile pet groomer insurance policy. You don’t need to purchase professional liability separately or add it on; just buy a pet groomer policy, and you’re set!

Note: PCI only offers professional liability coverage to groomers at this time. Questions? Read about how to get insurance for a pet business, or let our customer service agents help you customize coverage to fit you.

Your certificate of insurance (COI) will list all the coverages included in your policy, including your professional liability. At PCI, you can access and download your COI anytime through your user dashboard. For more help with managing your policy, check out our FAQ page.

Comparing Employee Dishonesty Coverage & Bonding

PCI’s employee dishonesty coverage is similar to a bond, but there may be some key differences to consider.

Employee dishonesty coverage:

  • Can be purchased in the same transaction
  • Doesn’t run credit checks
  • Provides $10,000 per occurrence and $25,000 aggregate coverage

Bonds may differ from our dishonesty coverage by:

  • Checking your credit during the application process
  • Having a “Conviction Claus;” Often bonds won’t pay on claims unless there is a conviction
  • Many require you to reimbursement the bonding company after a claim is paid
